The Pope on Islam

When asked if he thought that Islam was a religion of peace, Pope Benedict XVI said, "I wouldn’t want to label (it),” he said. “Certainly there are elements that favor peace. It also has other elements."

If he thinks that this applies only to Islam, then he's forgotten about Eric Rudolph, the protestors at Matthew Shepard's funeral and a plethora of violence and hate perpetrated by Christians daily in the name of their religion.

It is really sad the way the human mind works. ie: the pope, the president, etc. I agree that many Christians can be very myopic about the history of their faith. But in the end and very simplified, the Christian faith is all about loving the other guy more than one loves oneself. If more of the world's population could really strive to embrace only this one of Christ's messages....we would all be better for it. Sadly we are all human with human failings.
However, I have found that no matter what religion or creed one professes, it is the person making the most noise (whether in a positive or negative way) that brings the most attention. Sometimes this person happens to be a prominent world leader. This puts an even heavier load of responsiblity upon that person to be careful of what they say or do. They are scrutinized, analyzed, and vilified--sometimes understandably so--for things they have said or actions taken.
In my own life I have tried, not always successfully, to perpetuate only the positive side of Christianity. I cannot and will not take reponsibility for the actions of wrong minded, hate mongering persons who claim to be christian, any more than I will take responsiblity for any caucasian predecessor who may have espoused slavery.
I would also like to say this....Not all Christians are ruled by violence and hate, so it saddens me, no, it grieves me when I hear that this is a common view of my faith. There are many wonderful, caring Christians in this world and I hope that you aren't putting us all in the same box.
